The idea of a “perfect” life is a myth, unless of course you understand perfection to include loss. This sermon reminds us of the blessings in an imperfect life.
Sunday, October 11th, we welcome Sam Teitel, a Unitarian Universalist poet, educator, and punk rocker. He is currently studying at Andover Newton Theological School with a focus on interfaith leadership. After his projected graduation from Andover Newton Theological School in May of 2016 he plans to pursue ordination as a Unitarian Universalist minister. He is currently serving as the ministerial intern at First Church in Boston. He believes in creating a worship environment that is lively, joyful, and thought-provoking.
His sermon is based on a famous story in the book of Genesis about Jacob having a literal wrestling match with God. As Unitarian Universalists it can seem like we as a spiritual community are wrestling with the idea of God all the time, or else wrestling with each other over the idea of God. In this service we will be exploring what it means to wrestle God, both on a physical an on a spiritual level.
Today’s sermon will look at what we Unitarian Universalists have in common. As members of a free liberal religious tradition each of us carry the burden of this freedom. I will attempt to answer the questions: To what and to whom are we responsible? This would be a good sermon to bring a friend!
In the spirit of the Jewish holyday of Yom Kippur, which this year is on Sept 22-23, we will examine the Book of Jonah to see what it has to say about our own relationships.
Sunday, September 20th – Guest Speaker, Laura Graham, one of the Ministerial Settlement Representatives for the New England Region of our UUA. She is a Family Mediator and a member of the First Parish in Concord. As a Ministerial Settlement Representative, Laura acts as a consultant to our Region’s congregations and their search committees to help them implement the recommended process for choosing their next settled minister. Laura’s after-service informational session is for all who are interested in better understanding how the search year unfolds, what to expect from the governing board, what to expect from the search committee, and what to expect from the congregation. Everyone has a part to play in moving UUSF into its next chapter. Becoming better informed about the process and your role in it will go a long way toward supporting the good people who have volunteered to serve on your search committee and ensuring a successful search experience for all. Laura will present a short overview of the year ahead; then take questions from the floor.
Welcome back! This Sunday is our Intergenerational Ingathering. You are invited to bring any object of personal or spiritual significance from your home or your travels to place upon our altar. Perhaps you have collected sea glass or shells or read an inspiring book or took a photograph of a place or person you visited. You may of course bring a small amount of water to place in our communal bowl. Today’s message will examine the sacred in the ordinary and ask the question from where do you receive fragments of holiness, glimpses of eternity, brief moments of insight and connection?
